About Kevin McKrell:
Somewhere tonight, across the country or across the sea, a singer, sitting on a stool on a pub’s corner stage, is belting out a Kevin McKrell song and the crowd is singing along. McKrell pioneered American Celtic music beginning in 1979 with his band ‘Donnybrook Fair’. The original trio’s 1982 album Tunnel Tigers remains a landmark of the form, with its blend of Clancy Brothers swagger and upstate NY attitude. Donnybrook spent 10 years on the Irish circuit starting at Mullens Mountain Spring Hotel during the heyday of the Irish Alps in upstate NY. Then on to the top pubs in the USA including The Irish Village, Chicago Illinois, McCaffertys Red Hand, St. Paul MN, The Patriot Game, San Diego CA., O’Donaghues, Pittsburgh PA, The Detroit Irish League, Detroit MI to name a few. In 1998, McKrell—who has five solo albums to his credit—formed a powerhouse band under his own name, merging the Irish sensibility of Donnybrook with a steely, world class bluegrass edge. The McKrells toured harder than Donnybrook, bringing its music, with McKrell’s lusty vocals supported by hot string band picking to festivals and concert venues in Ireland and the USA. Kevin opened many times for American country music superstars Travis Tritt and Lonestar, bluegrass artists Allison Krause and Union Station, American folk artists The Kingston Trio as well as often opening for Irish Icons Tommy Makem and Liam Clancy , and whenever The Furey Brothers toured the USA Kevin joined them as the opening act including an amazing performance at New York’s famed Carnegie Hall that included a joyous standing ovation and encore ,a very rare occurrence for an opening act, with The Fureys doing a Kevin McKrell song for their encore. Offstage, McKrell, is a respected painter and sculptor, with his work hanging in many of the halls he’s haunted, here and in Ireland, Scotland and Italy. Kevin McKrell is best known, though, for his indelible songs—classics like ‘Donegal’, ‘I Miss the Rain’, ‘Dublin Town’ and the eternal ‘All of The Hard Days Are Gone’—which, in addition to the raft of pub singers mentioned afore, have been sung and recorded by artists such as The Furey Brothers, The Kilkennys, Stephens Green, The Kingston Trio, Bob Shane, North Sea Gas, Hair of the Dog, Seamus Kennedy ,The Druids, The Dublin City Ramblers ,Wood’s Tea Company, Get Up Jack and many others. Kevin and his bands have performed for audiences at the top Celtic, Folk and Bluegrass festivals as well as The Courthouse Pub, Dingle Co. Clare, The Square Pint Kenmare, Co. Kerry, DeBarras Folk Club Clonakilty Co. Cork, The Embankment, Tallaght, Dublin, The Kilworth Arts Center, Kilworth Co. Cork, The Harp and Fiddle Pittsburgh PA. The Pittsburgh Irish Festival Pittsburgh PA, The Black Bear Americana Fest, The Buffalo Irish Festival Buffalo NY ,The Parting Glass, Saratoga Springs NY, Carnegie Hall NY NY, Lincoln Center NY NY, Troy Music Hall Troy NY, Caffé Lena Saratoga Springs NY, Berklee Performance Hall Boston MA., Saratoga Performing Arts Center Saratoga Springs NY, The Egg Center for Performing Arts Albany NY, North Texas Irish Festival Dallas TX, Milwaukee Irish Festival Milwaukee WI ,Celtic Classic, Bethelhem PA., The Savannah Irish Festival, Savannah GA, The Great American Irish Festival Herkimer NY, MusikFest Bethlehem PA, Falcon Ridge Folk Festival, Winterhawk Bluegrass festival are some of the top venues where Kevin and his bands have appeared.
