Ireland History – Ashford Castle

Ashford Castle was founded by the Anglo-Norman de Burgo family following their defeat of the native O'Connors of Connaught. The de Burgo family would build several such castles throughout the province, but Ashford would remain their principal stronghold. After three and a half centuries under the de Burgo's, Ashford Castle passes into the hands of a new owner in the 1500’s. Following a fierce battle between the forces of the de Burgo's and those of the English Lord Bingham, governor of Connaught, a truce is agreed and the castle falls to Bingham who added a fortified enclave within its precincts.

In the 1700’s Ashford estate is established by the Oranmore and Browne family and they add a french style chateau is to the architectural splendor of the castle. In the 1900’s this historical Irish castle is then retained by the Iveagh trust on behalf of the Guinness family until it is bought by Noel Huggard in 1939, who then establishes this spectacular example of Irish architecture as a "First Class Hotel". Hollywood director John Ford comes to the west of Ireland to film the John Wayne movie classic "The Quiet Man" and many of the films starring actors stayed at Ashford Castle Hotel. The Castle is later bought by John A. Mulcahy who oversees its complete restoration and expansion, doubling its size, building the golf course and developing the grounds and gardens. In 1985 a group of Irish American investors purchase Ashford Castle. And in 2008 Ashford Castle was purchased by Galway Entrepreneur and Hotelier Mr Gerry Barrett.

Activities on this spectacular Ireland estate include golf, fishing, cruising and the ancient art of falconry, whilst treatment rooms, a sauna and steam room are found in the castle.

There are four dining options available in the castle from timeless classical cuisine in the George V restaurant to a snack menu in the Drawing room.
